Cuvaison Estate Wines

Cuvaison Winery is situated on the historic Silverado Trail in northern Napa Valley. In 1969 Thomas Cotrell and Thomas Parkhill, both Silicon Valley engineers, founded Cuvaison with a 27-acre vineyard at the winery’s present location. New York publisher Oakleigh Thorne purchased the winery in 1974 and then appointed the Swiss-born Philip Togni as Winemaker. In 1979, the Schmidheiny family of Switzerland purchased Cuvaison as well as 400 acres of prime vineyard land in the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley. The fall of 1998 marked the purchase of the historic 170-acre Brandlin Ranch on Mt. Veeder. John Thacher took over the winemaking in 1982. In 1988, he was selected as Winemaker of the Year by “Wine & Spirits” magazine and then became President in 1998. With John’s departure at the end of 2001, Jay Schuppert became President and Steven Rogstad took over as Head Winemaker. Steven oversees all vineyard operations at both the Carneros and Brandlin Ranch estates. Steven uses the finest equipment and French oak barrels in the fermentation of Chardonnay and in the aging process of Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Estate Selection wines – all of which are planted at the winery’s 400 acre estate in the Carneros region – as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, which comes from the St. Helena, Howell Mountain and Calistoga regions of the Napa Valley. All Cuvaison grapes are harvested by hand. The philosophy of Cuvaison wines echoes Steven Rogstad’s winemaking in stating, "Our wines must be the unique expression of the singular sites from which they come, it's our wonderful vineyards that shape the style of each wine and that's as it should be."
Cuvaison Winery produces approximately 63,000 cases per year, 65% of which is Chardonnay. Today, Cuvaison wines are distributed in all 50 states and are presented in over 25 international markets, first class airlines services such as British Airways, and China Airlines and on cruise lines such as Holland America, Carnival, Seabourn and Crystal . Approximately 20% of Cuvaison’s production is sold internationally each year.

Directions
Directions to Winery from Napa: Take Highway 29N to Dunaweal Lane and go right. Turn right on Silverado Trail and Cuvaison Winery is 100 yards up on the left-hand side. Directions to Winery from Santa Rosa: Take Highway 101 to Mark West Springs Road. Stay on Mark West Spring Road for approximately twenty minutes, until you reach Petrified Forest Road. You will then need to make a left. Petrified Forest Road dead ends at Highway 29/128 (there will be a short stop on your right hand side). Make a right heading south on Highway 29 for approximately 2.5 miles to Dunaweal Lane, and make a left onto Dunaweal Lane. Follow to the end at Silverado Trail and make a right. Cuvaison is 100 yards on your left.
Directions to Winery from San Francisco
(Approximately 2.5 hours): Take 101N to Novato, Highway 37. Follow the signs to Napa, and then make a left on Highway 12/121 (Sonoma). Keep to the right and follow to Highway 29, which is approximately 12 miles. Make a left on Highway 29 heading north through Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena; we are approximately 9 miles North of St. Helena. Then come to Dunaweal Lane and make a right. Follow to the end at Silverado Trail and make a right. Cuvaison is 100 yards up on the left-hand side.

Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley
A dark concentrated wine that is both elegant and polished, with aromas of black cherry, lavender, mocha, licorice, cola and allspice. Good structure on the palate with integrated flavors of bright fruits, rosehips and hints of coffee.

Chardonnay Carneros
Cuvaison’s Carneros Chardonnay comes from our 400-acre estate in the southern part of Napa Valley. This cool climate vineyard allows us nearly perfect conditions year after year to produce world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Controlling all farming aspects within our own vineyard gives Cuvaison an advantage in producing the best quality fruit therefore minimizing over manipulation at the winery. Winemaker Steven Rogstad sums it up best, “My style and philosophy are based on expressing the unique character of our estate grapes and doing as little as possible to them. When one has such wonderful fruit to work with, that should be one’s emphasis.”

Cuvaison BMV Zinfandel - Napa Valley
Cuvaison’s Zinfandel is blended from unique and distinctive areas of Napa Valley. Key sources are from well-drained sites on Mt. Veeder and vineyards from the Valley floor. Winemaker Steven Rogstad, works very closely with these independent growers to develop the highest quality fruit

Estate Selection Chardonnay
A big and bold Chardonnay with the ideal balance of fruit, oak and structure. Intense and full-bodied with crème brulee, almond and orange peel. Aromas of pear, honey, allspice with tropical fruit.

Estate Selection Pinot Noir
Plum, rose petals, cola nut and nutmeg. Wild strawberries, raspberry, orange tea and caramel. A serious Pinot Noir with rich layered fruit, sweet tannins and fine acidity.

Merlot Carneros
An appealing wine that exhibits an array of ripe berry flavors, and which will also continue to age gracefully for many years. Broad nose of mocha, black cherry, and plum with hints of black licorice. Filled with bright concentrated flavors of ripe dark fruit with overtones of allspice.

Pinot Noir - Napa Valley Carneros
This is a classic example of Pinot Noir grown in our Estate Vineyard. Aromas of red raspberry, black cherry, smoky leather and allspice. A rich palate with integrated tannins. Flavors of damson plum, spice and orange peel, with a long finish.

Syrah Carneros
For me, the 2003 Syrah is a dense and delicious swath of brambly dark fruit, wild fennel, sage and what the French like to call sous bois, or underbrush. Curiously, all this foreshadowing gives way to a surprisingly fresh wave of red currants, raspberry and elegant plum fruit wedded to satin smooth tannins. A lip-smacking Syrah, enjoy it now in its riotous youth, or let it mellow gracefully, in your cellar over the next five to 10 years. A scant number of cases were estate grown, produced and bottled for your enjoyment.
