Poplar Grove Winery
|
|
Ian and Gitta Sutherland bought 12 acres on Okanagan Lake. In 1993 the apple trees were replaced by a vineyard using merlot and cabernet franc clones from Bordeaux. The winery opened in 1997 with '95 merlot and '95 cab franc. Owners Ian and Gitta Sutherland won a Gold medal in 1997 for their very first release. This family run winery works on a very limited scale.

Benchmark Cab Franc
Friends and fellow Cab Franc aficionados have been waiting for this. Last years winner of the Lt. Governor's "Best of the Best" award and born in the stellar 2003 vintage, the Benchmark Cab Franc 2003 has been wowing barrel samplers since it was made. Cropped at one ton per acre (most vineyards crop at 4 tons per acre) and grown by the lake, the wine exhibits depth and complexity that reflects all the advantages of the vintage. Barrel aged in 70% new French oak, the wine developed soft ripe tannins and loads of sweet dark fruit. Chocolate notes extend the finish and coat the mouth with goodness. Only 316 cases made. Lay this wine down and fondle affectionately for 5 years, sampling occasionally.

Benchmark Merlot
Professionally evaluated on May 22/06 and declared under priced. Big and jammy is what "Hollywood and Vines" tasters dubbed the Benchmark Merlot and went on to say that wineries with $100 bottles should watch out for this one. We like to think of our Benchmark Merlot with a little less hyperbole. The blackberry and cherry flavours are well integrated with the French oak, but really, ripe fruit tannins are the key to this wine's structure. Concentrated intense cranberry and blackberry play off against hints of leather, cigar box and vanilla. At three years old this wine may seem too young on its own, so lay it down and wait for cellaring to work ts magic or pair the Benchmark Merlot 2003 with big juicy roasts, chops or steaks and have it for dinner now.

Gamay Nouveau
Stawerry and white pepper on the nose , this fresh young red lives for summer on the deck or boat.
|
Gewurztraminer
Fresh clean fruit with no residual sugar , a great patio cooler for this summer.

New Block Merlot
Our New Block Merlot is made from our newest producing vineyard block and displays the fruitiness that younger vines bring to the blend. Cherry, blackberry, red current and savory sage notes highlight the nose and rich tannins fill the mid pallete. Medium to long finish. Cellaring potential to 5 years.

Pinot Blanc
Stylistically very French, with crisp acidity and clean fruit flavours. A food friendly summer sipper that pairs well with all the goodies from the sea, as well as the rich creamy cheeses of Poplar Grove.

Pinot Gris
This is the Pinot Gris I've always wanted to make. Whole cluster pressing and slow cool fermentation with no barrel aging has allowed the wine to retain all of its' Pinot Gris character. It has lovely tropical fruit for the bouquet and a mouth filling presence of stone fruit. The acidity and alcohol are balanced to bring freshness and warmth to the mix. This wine lingers and invites. A favourite paired with Poplar Grove Double Cream Camembert, or Naramata Bench Blue.

Reserve
A blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2003 vintage had all the advantages of a stellar growing season where the hot, dry summer gave way to a cool fall lasting well into November. The exceptional growing season, combined with very low grape yields, gave our winemaking team fabulous fruit to work with.

Viognier / Pinot Gris
A highly non-traditional blend with a surprising result.
Barrel fermented Viognier with its rich apricot base is a very interesting foil for the citrus and tropical crispness of our Pinot Gris. The wine has a rich nose, good structure throughout and a lovely long finish. We were only able to make just over a hundred cases of this remarkable wine.
