Ozan Winery & Vineyard

Ozan Winery & Vineyard Ozan is a relaxed vineyard and winery setting located in the Center of Alabama’s Wine community. Just a mile off I-65 at Calera Exit 228 near Calera in Shelby County, Ozan is part of any day trip from Birmingham or Montgomery and is a great travel break when recreating in Alabama! Traditional viticulture is practiced in the vineyard and wines produced on the property are available to the public. Our winery and tasting room replaces I-65 road noise with a hill side vineyard view, an occasional wild turkey, and a beautiful Alabama sunset .

Directions
DAY TRIP FROM BIRMINGHAM: Take I-65 South to Exit 228. Turn left onto Highway 25 and travel across the interstate overpass. On your right after 0.4 miles, take Shelby County Road 306. Stay on 306 for about 0.6 miles and take Shelby County Road 301 on your Right. Pass over the active Dixie Railroad track and see OZAN WINERY on your left. Enter at the brick columns and stay left to reach the tasting room. DAY TRIP FROM MONTGOMERY: Take I-65 North to Exit 228. Turn Right onto Highway 25.   Cabernet Sauvignon
Our red wines are destemmed, and allowed to ferment for up to two weeks prior to pressing. Fermentation, secondary fermentation, and racking took place in stainless tanks. Traditional methods require Cabernet to age quietly for 12-24 months in the barrel with additional bottle aging. Look for an April 2007 release of Ozan Cabernet.
  Chardonnay
CHARDONNAY 2005 Our Chardonnay was chilled and pressed immediately after crush, cold fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in premium French and American barrels. Soft citrus flavors abound with the classic buttery oak expected from a handcrafted Chardonnay. Best enjoyed with a slight chill and paired with spicy fish or fowl entres, but stands out alone as well.
  Norton
NORTON 2005 Our 1st vintage produced during the hurricane season provided an abundant harvest for winemaking. After destemming, the Norton must was allowed to ferment for as long as two weeks prior to pressing. Fermentation, secondary fermentation and racking took place in stainless tanks with finish aging in American oak barrels.
  Ozan Peach
We are fortunate to be located near Alabama’s peach growing region and have contracted this year a number of trees for a 2006 vintage. Look for an April 2007 release of Chilton County Peach.
  Vidal
This white grape was fermented to dryness in neutral French barrels and is best served chilled. While great alone parings with light summer meals, salads or hors douvres make the day

Norton Wine Review: We traveled to Ozan Winery's nice out-in-the-country setting which came complete with a much shorter than advertised train ride from the vineyard. This was an interesting stop because of their unorthodox approach to Norton wine production. First was a Vino Rose Norton which was appreciably not too sweet. We picked up a couple bottles as gifts for friends who would perhaps enjoy such. Next we sampled Ozan’s 2007 Norton wine. Let me be truthful in saying that we did not truly enjoy this Norton wine sample, but let me also state that there might be others who find this an interesting Lite Norton. I’m not found of anything Lite, be it Lite beer or Lite DSL Internet speeds. Ozan’s Norton had a light uncharacteristic color and a taste I would not wish to cultivate in comparison to other Norton wines. Norton wines [sometimes called Cynthiana wine] can also be found at White Oaks Vineyard in Alabama and several wineries in Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and Missouri.
