This is a broad representation of Bethel Heights estate vineyard with its unique configuration of soils, slopes, and clones evolved over 23 years, certified sustainably grown under international standards. Aged 14 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered. The signature of this wine is intense black cherry fruit with hints of black pepper. The powerful fruit makes in enjoyable young, the underlying structure bodes well for aging. $25

One of the few vineyards planted in the foothills of Oregon's Coast Range on ocean floor (Bellpine) soils, Freedom Hill Vineyard yields robust, well-structured wines that age extremely well. This wine is primarily from Pommard clone vines planted in 1988 with a small amount of Wädenswil clone. Aged in 30% new French oak and bottled unfiltered. This is a fruit-driven wine with a core of black cherry. It has a high-tone aromatic character that counter-balances its huge structure.

438 cases produced. Nysa Vineyard is a densely planted 10-year-old vineyard in the Dundee Hills, named after the home of the god Dionysus (Dio from Nysus). The fruit came from two Pinot noir clones, 75% Wädenswil and 25% Pommard. This is a dark, concentrated wine with notes of currant and plum.

490 cases produced. The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Estate vineyard planted to the Pommard clone in 1979. This block consistently provides exceptional fruit of distinctive character. The 2001 has a spicy nose of nutmeg and clove, flavors of black cherry, cola, roasted hazelnut and light roast coffee with mocha notes on the finish. Sweet fruit and good structure through the finish make this wine a good candidate for cellaring. "Dark in hue and blue in tone, this wine is still unresolved at the moment. But the pieces already in place are haunting, redolent of pine forests shrouded in fog. For all its dark tones, it's surprisingly fresh on the palate, on the second day, blue-green pine scents more firmly anchor the wine, yet its light touch remains." ( 91) Wine & Spirits

470 cases produced. The West Block at Bethel Heights Vineyard (formerly know as Wadenswil Block) was planted in 1977 making it the oldest planting of Pinot noir in the estate vineyard. In our warmest vintages when late harvest allows the clone to achieve maximum flavor development it yields exceptional stand-alone wines of distinctive character. Firm tannins balanced by opulent fruit define the character of this powerful wine.

250 cases produced. This wine is a significant departure from 25 years of focus on Pinot noir, primarily from our own vineyard. The Del Rio Vineyard is located 15 miles north of Medford on the Rogue River in southern Oregon. Our first Syrah is a big, dark, earthy wine dominated by black pepper and enticing perfume. Aged 10 months in 40% new oak bottled unfiltered. $30

832 cases produced. A new style of Oregon Chardonnay. blended from 50% Dijon Clone and 50% Old Vine Wente Clone. Barrel fermented in French oak (15% new barrels), aged 21 months on the lees with complete malolactic fermentation. Flavors of pears and apples with earthy background notes. Nice integration of wood spice and fruit, rich in the mouth with good balancing acidity.

273 cases produced. Our first Reserve Pinot Gris is a blend of 77% fruit from the Del Rio Vineyard and 23% from Bethel Heights. The Bethel Heights fruit was fermented cold in stainless steel to preserve its distinctive fresh fruit character, but we decided to nudge the weightier Del Rio fruit one step further in the Alsatian direction by fermenting it in neutral oak. The two were blended after fermentation was complete. With ripe pear and melon flavors, a hint of floral character and a certain viscosity enhanced by barrel fermentation, this wine is the perfect match for crab cakes or pan fried oysters.

This is a new wine for Bethel Heights, a blended Reserve Pinot Noir that bears a family name rather than a place name, breaking with our twenty-year tradition of celebrating the unique characteristics of very site-specific pinot noirs. It is composed of fruit from Bethel Heights Wädenswil Block, Bethel Heights Flat Block, and Seven Springs Vineyard, in about equal parts. In blending this wine we watched lots that we knew were terrific stand-alone wines disappear into a new wine that has its own character and exceptional quality. "The 2002 Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve is a superb debut for this new label. Its sublime aromatics burst with flowers, spices, and copious quantities of dark fruits. Expansive, ample, and wonderfully harmonious, its concentrated, deep character offers loads of highly expressive violet, rose, cherry, blackberry, and blueberry flavors. Having tasted Bethel Heights's wines from each individual vineyard included in this blend, there is no doubt in my mind that the sum is greater than the individual parts." (93) Wine Advocate

This wine was aged 14 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered. It offers intense black cherry fruit with hints of black pepper. Elegant, fragrant, supple, bright. "Firm and nicely focused to show its peppery black cherry flavors, balanced well with fine tannins and just enough acidity to give it zest. Finishes with a floral, cedary touch. Cries out for food. One of Oregon's "Grand Cru" vineyards, Freedom Hill is planted in the foothills of Oregon's Coast Range on sedimentary soils that warm up early in the spring and dry out early in the fall. Freedom Hill yields robust, well-structured wines that age extremely well. "This is a muscular, masculine, concentrated wine. Big, intensely-flavored, and deep, it coats the taster's palate with black cherries and dark berries. This terroir generally fashions wines with firm tannic backbones yet Terry Casteel, much to his credit, was able to craft a Freedom Hill with tamed tannin while displaying its typically powerful fruit." After primary fermentation , the new wine was pressed gently and barreled in 40% new barrels, part French oak and part Oregon white oak. This is a dark, concentrated wine with notes of currant and plum.

In 2002, for the first time we were able to purchase fruit from the Seven Springs Vineyard located on the eastern side of the Eola Hills ridge, about 5 miles from Bethel Heights Vineyard. This wine is from own-rooted Pommard clone Pinot noir vines planted in 1989. "Produced from fruit acquired from one of Oregon's finest, most consistent vineyards, the 2002 Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard bursts from the glass with violets, spices, and black cherries. Medium-bodied, it is packed with gorgeously defined fruit, sports considerable depth as well as concentration, and has a sappy characteristic found in the finest Pinots. Loads of blueberries, grapes, and ripe dark cherries can be discerned in its complex personality. This wine is definitely outstanding yet has a bright future. My experience with Seven Springs Pinots is that they get even better with cellaring." (91+) The Wine Advocate

205 cases produced. The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Estate vineyard planted to the Pommard clone in 1979. This block consistently provides exceptional fruit of distinctive character. In this complex wine from a great vintage, damp earth and vibrant forest tones vie with blueberry, peach preserve and white plum aromas on the nose. On the palate it displays an almost resinous intensity of fruit with layers of black cherry, red gooseberry and blackberry swirling among copious but polished tannins. The wine displays an exceptionally long finish. While tempting now for its power and concentration, the wine will integrate more completely with a bit of bottle age and promises to drink well for many years.

Formerly known as the Wädenswil Block, this wine is made from the oldest Pinot noir vines at Bethel Heights Vineyard, planted in 1977, with some young Dijon clone 114 blended in for complexity. Wädenswil is a late ripening clone which produces very rich, powerful wines in our warmest vintages. Certified sustainably grown. "An amazingly fruity wine that delivers fleshy, yet jaunty flavors. From vines planted at Bethel Heights in 1992, certified sustainably grown, our Pinot blanc is whole cluster pressed and cold fermented in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation to emphasize the fruit character of this rather delicate grape. Almost dry with 0.4% residual sugar, it has tropical overtones with a citus zest and creaminess on the palate. An excellent brunch, luncheon or appetizer wine. "Floral scented, broad, rich, and plush. This fine value reveals honeyed mineral flavors typically found in a Pint Gris, not a Pinot Blanc." (87) The Wine Advocate

2175 cases produced. With more body than Italian style Pinot grigio, and less weight than Pinot gris from Alsace, Bethel Heights' style of Pinot gris is a food-friendly alternative to Chardonnay. Fruit from several vineyards in the Willamette Valley provide brightness and purity of fruit, fruit from the warmer climate of the Rogue Valley adds lush, floral qualities to this wine. The wine is fermented cold in stainless steel and finished, without malolactic fermentation, almost dry with 0.4% residual sugar. "Yellow plums and hints of apricots are intermingled with white flowers in the aromatic profile of the 2003 Pinot Gris. Soft, satin-textured, and expressive, it displays a medium-bodied personality awash in ripe white as well as yellow fruits. A good value." (87) Wine Advocate
