Saviez Vineyards Wine Co.
|
|
Francois Saviez, around the year of 1883, arrived on Ellis Island in New York. He made his way to California working for a short time as a logger. He then came to the Napa Valley and found himself the vineyard manager for the famed “Fireball Lily” Lily Coit of the Larkmead area near Calistoga. In 1885 he married Marie Louise Bordot. Around 1900, he bought the home ranch which is still owned and operated by the 3rd and 4th generation of Saviez’s. Cyril Saviez, know as “Mr. Calistoga” (in his hay days), was born in 1909. He work the ranch which at some points were prunes, walnuts, and grapes. In the early to mid 1900’s, Napa Valley was just another farming community trying to survive. The obvious great climate and superior wine production was to flourish from the 1970’s, until now. In the 1980’s Paul Saviez, Cyril’s son, was working construction and in the vineyards. Toward the end of the 80’s Paul took over the management of the family vineyard and still runs it today. He is hopeful that his daughter, Monique, will take it over someday with the on going wine production that was started in 1997. Francois Saviez had an on site winery for some time before it burned down in a forest fire in the 1940’s. He and Cyril did not rebuild. Paul started production of estate bottled Zinfandel in 1997 thinking to bring full circle the heritage of his family.
