Burgess Cellars
|
|
Burgess Cellars is a stone and redwood mountainside winery which was originally started in the 1880's. It's adjacent vineyards support the belief that it is vital to grow only those varieties of grapes which are best suited to the particular aspects of that land; such as soil, exposure, and climate. That is why the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Zinfandel are planted in the winery's mountain vineyards. The Estate Chardonnay grapes are also grown in an ideal location south of Yountville. There, the cooler bay-influenced temperatures and breezes create fruit of superior quality and unique character. The worldwide reputation of Burgess wines lies in the fact that they are always in perfect harmony, fully integrated to form a "total impression". Maximum varietal character, firm oak, good body, and long, complex finish are stressed. These attributes are controlled through painstaking attention to the estate vineyards and labor intensive old world winemaking techniques; all brought together with the most modern technology.

1993 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Our Library program is now in its second decade, having started with the vintage of 1980. We hold a small percent of the bottled Cabernet Sauvignon back until it is at least 10 years old. This concept demonstrates that our mountain vineyards have the ability to age under proper cellar conditions. The aged wine then displays the characteristics of Cabernet with bottle bouquet. Our Library release wine now has that quality that only Cabernet Sauvignon kept under ideal conditions can provide — the cedar, leather, chocolate, and pepper flavors and aromas. The vintage of 1993 was excellent for our Cabernet harvest. The summer was warm and harvest began about two weeks earlier than normal. This assured full maturity and outstanding complexity. There are layers of aromas balanced with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, along with complementary French Oak.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
The vintage of 2001 was harvested earlier than normal, though our hillside vineyard normally reaches full maturity due to budbreak occurring about two weeks earlier than the valley floor. The aroma and flavor of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is magnified by the ideal ripening conditions, which occurred for this vintage. The finish is also extensive, which comes from the vintage and our mountain vineyards. This wine will complement food of robust style and will continue to develop with proper aging.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
”This is a complex, interesting wine that won't induce sticker shock while delivering a lot of complexity. Fruit notes include black cherry and blackberry, with mercifully subtle oak and nice little accents of mint and dried herbs. Soft and rounded in texture but still nicely structured and capable of standing up to serious food, this is a balanced, sophisticated Cab that features fine fruit and deft winemaking.” -- Michael Franz

Chardonnay, Napa Valley
Burgess Triere Chardonnay is produced from grapes grown in the southern part of the Napa Valley at the Burgess estate vineyard. The influence of San Pablo Bay provides a perfect environment for the Chardonnay to reach optimum maturity with classic varietal flavors. This wine shows a high level of mature fruit along with the toasty tones of its French Vosges oak barrel aging. It has classic components, which complement food and with layers of complexity provide a long-lasting finish.

Chardonnay, Napa Valley
The wine displays full, rich flavors and a generous body along with the toasty tones from its barrel fermentation and sur lies aging. The rare style of this Napa Valley Chardonnay is best described as a wonderful accompaniment to the dining experience.
|
Merlot, Napa Valley
The harvest of 2002 was a bit extended, which gave the grapes time to achieve full maturity and the ability to obtain a full and complex character. This wine is 100% Merlot, rotary fermented and aged in 100% French oak barrels. This is a very serious Merlot that can only be grown under ideal conditions. It is a wonderful accompaniment with food and will continue to develop with cellaring.

Merlot, Napa Valley
The Merlot was grown in our estate vineyard just south of Yountville. This region of the Napa Valley is ideal for bringing Merlot to full maturity, thus producing a full- bodied, rich, complex wine with a long lasting finish. The vines are oriented north/south so that they capture both morning and afternoon sun. Another unique characteristic of our Merlot is the hint of mint in the aroma and flavor that comes from Eucalyptus trees growing alongside the vines.

Syrah, Napa Valley
This wine shows the classic varietal fruit qualities of spice and blackberry along with the complements of one-half American oak and one-half French oak barrel aging. The finish is long and has a classic mouth feel, which only the syrah grape can provide. The grapes were picked at optimum maturity and rotary fermented to achieve the best of extractions. The rotary fermentation also allows us to maintain the "just right: tannin level. This Burgess vineyard is on a mountainside facing east above Pope Valley. This environment concentrates the characteristics by restricting the yields. After the grapes are picked, the most modern techniques are used to capture all the qualities

Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Our mountain vineyards produce stressed grapes with intense aromas and generous flavors because of the lack of ground water. With the addition of 10% Petite Sirah, this wine has a classic style of spicy, berry flavors. The delicious flavor and lingering finish complement most foods, especially "Mediterranean" style dishes with peppers and olive oil. Our eastern facing mountain vineyard is the primary source for these grape varieties. The morning sun exposure allows for full maturity and produces a wine of generous proportions. This is a serious style wine which will continue to develop even though it is very drinkable now.
|
Zinfandel, Napa Valley
This was an early harvest, even for a mountain-grown wine. It was fermented in rotary fermenters, which builds the extraction, and at the same time keeps the tannin levels in the correct proportion. The wine is extremely full in aroma and taste and will complement most food with its Mediterranean style.
