Black Bridge Winery

Western Colorado's terrain and weather are ideal for growing grapes, and Orchard Valley Farms has been supplying some of western Colorado's finest wineries since 1997. Now we are happy to announce our own label. The first Black Bridge Winery vintages will be available in summer 2005. Named for the nearby historic bridge, Black Bridge Winery will produce fine cabernet, merlot, pinot noir and chardonnay in coming years. Our underground "wine cave" for barrel storage, aging, and barrel tasting events is currently under construction. The cave's structural steel framework was salvaged from a local mining operation.

Cabernet Sauvignon-S
In the 1880s, Serb and Italian families migrated to the North Fork of the Gunnison River in western Colorado to work in the coalmines. They brought many traditions of their homeland, of planting fruit trees and grapevines and making wine for family and friends. Some traditions are too good end! Our Cabernet Sauvignon is traditionally crafted from grapes grown high in the Colorado Rockies. It is unfined and unfiltered, fermented in open vats, and barrel-aged in French oak, making a big, full-flavored wine.

Pinot Noir
More than 100 years ago on the Schaack family's land, sagebrush was cleared and Bing Cherries grafted onto bitter almond rootstock were planted. The exceptionally productive trees became known as “family trees” because it took a family all day to harvest one tree. On this same block, years later, our Pinot Noir vines now flourish. Like those cherries, our sustainably grown grapevines thrive in the mineral-rich soil of western Colorado's North Fork Valley. The deep well-drained site is formed in cobble and stone outwash alluvium soil derived from basalt found on old terraces, mesas, and fans.
