Each one of our products is based on a little piece of local history and heritage (unless, of course, we decide to produce some tequila ... in which case it would be more a matter of “let’s see if we can’t do this better”). The American love affair with distilled spirits and beer really has its basis in necessity: in colonial times most water was not safe to drink. Beer, cider and rum were. What an excuse.
Since we find ourselves considering water, Mad River Distillers uses only clear and pure water from our own wells -- not some chemically altered city water. The spirits that you will drink are as clean as the crisp Vermont air and snow-fed streams.
Our grains are locally-sourced, organic and free of pesticides and who-knows-what-else found in the raw materials of other producers. Our sugars are organic and American.
Our whiskeys and rums are all 96 proof. We feel that 80 proof is just not appropriate to define the experiences our products can provide, but at 96, you can add an ice cube and not “kill” it. A splash of water and you are still in the sweet spot. No training wheels here.
