Truckee River Winery
|
|
The air has gotten cold in Truckee and the trees are just starting to change and harvest is upon us. The 2003 Garys' Pinot went into the bottle in August and will be released some time in December. And it tastes great. The final release of 2002 Pinot has been anounced, which means there are less than 50 cases left, supplies will run out in October. Just recently a wine club in Sonoma called the Sonoma Wine Interest League or Swil did a blind tasting putting Truckee River Winery up against some of the big guys. The results put Truckee River overwhelmingly in first and second place. The 02 was first, the 01 was second. Up here at Truckee River Winery Russ Jones has been busy acuminating his skills as a premier Pinot Noir craftsman. He sources and oversees the viticultural aspects of 2 acres of Pinot from the highly coveted Garys' Vineyard which is planted to the Pisoni Clone. We bring the Grapes to Truckee and make wine while we watch it snow. Our efforts come to fruition after 2 years in barrels. Look for Russ at the Autumn Food and Wine Festival in Squaw Valley on October 2nd he will be pouring Pinot for sure. Also the day before Truckee has a wine walk and shop event. And on the 24th and 25th of September the winery will have a crush party, complete with barrel tastings, active fermentation and crush operations in full swing. Truckee River Winery makes limited quantities of fine wines. Current production includes Nevada County Merlot, Lodi Zinfandel and Garys' Vineyard Pinot Noir. Winemaker Russ Jones oversees all aspects of these handcrafted wines. Recent awards include a silver medal for the 02 Garys' Pinot at the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition. You may have seen Russ at the public tasting on March 12 at Fort Mason. Last year we got a Gold medal for the 2001 Garys' Vineyard Pinot Noir from the presitigous Grand Harvest Awards.

Directions
We are on the oposite side of the Truckee River from downtown, take the first right after crossing the bridge then we are the 4th house on the left, red house white trim with the red barn winery behind the house. It doesn't look like a Napa winery, this is Truckee and we are the only winery in town, "The Highest and Coldest"

GRIBAUDO VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
Ernie Gribaudo, a legend in Lodi, grew grapes on his 100-acres vineyard from 1930-2003, when his daughter and son assumed control. The grapes from these legendary vineyards are on average 40 years old and produce a smaller crop of fruit that is unusually rich and concentrated. The depth in color and flavor can be attributed to the agelessness of these grapes. The 2003 Zinfandel is big, bold with deep dark purple color and intense flavors of raspberry, cassis and cloves wrapped in soft oak and tannins making this one big wine.

Merlot
Even though Sideways slammed Merlot and Russ( a self proclaimed Pinot Noir winemaker in search of the holy grail of this most delicate and tempermental of all grapes and resultant wines) can relate to that comment. We believe the fruit that comes from this vineyard has distinctive characters not found in other Merlots. This 100% Merlot comes from the immaculately manicured Charianna Vineyard in Nevada County produces this wonderfully rich wine. This wine is full bodied with intense plum fruit flavors, remarkably well developed and balanced by ample tannins and acidity. There's an intriguing hint of black pepper in the long full finish. The grapes were picked late in the season and hand fermented, aged and bottled in Truckee.

Pinot Noir
The grapes are transported in a refrigerated truck, then crushed and cold soaked for up to 4 days. Fermentation starts slow because of the cool nights in Truckee and then ends strong about 4 weeks later. Our barrel ageing cellars are a cool 50-55 F. We age in 60% new french oak for a minimum of 18 months. All this produces a very delicate Pinot and with the complexity, depth, and soft tannins that the Pisoni clone is known for.
