Tangent Winery

Tangent Winery Welcome to tangent, where pure flavor and alternative varietals intersect. And that’s not just an intriguing marketing phrase. Well, it is, but we really mean it. We start with grapes of intense varietal character, grown in the cool, temperate Edna Valley. Winemaker Christian Roguenant works his magic, and we ultimately bottle fresh, crisp and vibrant white wines. No Chardonnay in sight. Not that we don’t love Chardonnay; we do. (Check out www.baileyana.com and you’ll see why.) An option is always welcome however, especially when it comes to eating. Most food seems to cry out for clean, lively wines with good acid structure. So we set out to find these wines, and realized there are few here in the States. We also found that no California winery was purely focused on alternative whites. With our access to some of the best cool-climate vineyards – which is where most of these varietals thrive – we thought we’d be nuts not to give it a shot. Whether we’re nuts or not is a matter of personal opinion. But we do believe that tangent wines exemplify true varietal character and there is place for them on any table. We hope you give them a try and let us know what you think.

  Ecclestone, San Luis Obispo County
“Each varietal brings something special to the final Ecclestone blend. Together the Pinot Gris and Riesling offer minerality and a pine-sap character; the Viognier and Pinot Blanc add hints of lychee and apricot; the Albariño shows its signature citrus and tangerine aromas and flavors; and of course the Muscat adds orange blossom notes. Christian Roguenant, Winemaker
  Pinot Blanc, Arroyo Grande Valley
“Ripe pear, apple and pineapple are the foremost characteristics of this beautifully balanced wine. It has good acid structure, but is round, soft and full-bodied. I recommend it with classic Cioppino, or grilled fish dishes with dill or lemongrass.” Christian Roguenant, Winemaker
  Pinot Gris, Paragon Vineyard
“This wine shows vibrant minerality and traditional hints of a pine-resin character. Tropical and stone fruits jump from the glass, but are well balanced by a bit of lemon and a nice acid backbone. My aim here was to keep to the pure Alsatian style. It pairs nicely with many foods, especially fried calamari and classic risotto.” Christian Roguenant, Winemaker
  Sauvignon Blanc, Paragon Vineyard
“This Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of French and New Zealand styles, with true varietal characteristics. It highlights grapefruit, passion fruit, green apple and lemon, and has a good grassy structure of minerals and lively acidity. Fabulous with spicy foods like Thai and Mexican, this wine is my favorite with just plain goat cheese spread on crackers.” Christian Roguenant, Winemaker
  Viognier, Paragon Vineyard
“This wine is a rare example of cool-climate viognier; it shows off the flavors of the Northern Rhone region of France more than most California-made viogniers that tend toward the more lush, tropical side. It has flavors of apricot, white peach and hints of citrus, and sports a nice, tight mineral structure with higher acid. I love it with crab cakes or stir-fried pork.” Christian Roguenant, Winemaker
