JM Cellars

JM Cellars JM Cellars is a small, family-owned winery in Woodinville, producing limited amounts of wines from some of Washington’s most exciting vineyards, including several renowned Red Mountain sites. John and Peggy Bigelow founded the winery in 1998, in the basement of their Seattle home. In 2001, JM Cellars was moved to “Bramble Bump,” a piece of property situated above Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville. John was inspired to make wine by one of America’s top winemakers, Mike Januik of Januik Winery. Combining old world artisan techniques with new world style, John crafts his wines one barrel at a time, striving for wines that show both power and finesse, and exemplify the well-balanced fruit, tannic structure and acidity that has made Washington wine a recognized player on the world stage of fine wines. We hope that you will enjoy our wines, and will find them complex, approachable and complementary to food.

  “Bramble Bump” Red
Many of our customers purchase our red wines to cellar and open on special occasions. So last year, we introduced Bramble Bump Red, designed and priced for every-night enjoyment. The reaction exceeded our expectations, and the “BBR” sold out quickly. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with a splash of Merlot, the BBR is soft but spicy and well-structured. (Release Date: June 4, 2005; 300 cases produced).
  “Willows Lodge” Cabernet Franc
Our 2003 is another wonderful vintage of Cabernet Franc made with fruit sourced from one of Washington’s most respected vineyards, Ciel du Cheval. This wine is specially bottled by JM Cellars for the Willows Lodge in Woodinville, and for direct sale from our winery in very limited quantities.
Cabernet Franc, Ciel du Cheval Vineyard
Sourcing Cabernet Franc from Ciel du Cheval ensures that our wine shows clean dark berry flavors, beautiful aromas, a surprisingly intense richness on the palate and a long finish. The 2005 JM Cabernet Franc is a rare gem and the only regret we have is ... we wish we had more of it! This wine will be allotted exclusively to our Wine Club members in our fall release.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot made exclusively with fruit from the esteemed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard in the Red Mountain appellation. The wine has aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberry, licorice and creamy nutmeg with a long, lingering finish. This rich Cabernet Sauvignon has the structure to age (5 - 7 years suggested) but can be enjoyed at a younger stage as well (decanting recommended). Released November, 2006
  Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain
All of the fruit for this wine is sourced from two noteworthy vineyards on Red Mountain - Klipsun Vineyard and Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. To this vintage of "Cab" we've added 9% Cabernet Franc from Ciel du Cheval, and 9% Klipsun vineyard Merlot. These wines have been aged in 70% new French oak from the Allier forest in France, which lends a subtle vanilla character on the palate. The 2005 JM Cab is probably the "biggest" cab we've produced; definitely cellaring well for 10+ years but is very approachable today, particularly when paired with food. This rich Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak, and it has a long, lingering finish. (Release date: September 12, 2004, 126 cases produced).
  Chardonnay
The following harvest we sourced two tons of Chardonnay from Milbrandt Vineyard. My assistant winemaker, Tim Drake, and I aged the Chardonnay on French oak (30% new) for eight months. We experimented with cultured and wild yeast and held the 2006 Chardonnay for nine months in bottle. It has many characteristics I personally look for in a Chardonnay; rich mouthfeel, traditional Chardonnay flavors and aromas and a long, lingering finish. I look forward to sharing it with you
  Columbia Valley Cuvée
In 2000 we began producing the Columbia Valley Cuvée as our "Bordeux" blend of Cab, Merlot and Cab Franc. Over the years the blend has evolved to include Malbec and Petite Verdot. The 2005 "Cuvée" is a blend of 44% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec and 6% Petite Verdot. Stillwater Creek is the featured vineyard for our 2005 Cuvée (75% of the grapes). Also represented in this wine are noteworthy vineyards Ciel du Cheval, Conner Lee, and Milbrandt. Drink now through 2015.
  Margaret's Vineyard Estate Red
In 2007 we planted a vineyard on the southern border of the Walla Walla Appellation and named it Margaret's Vineyard. Our goal was to plant an estate blend featuring red Bordeaux varietals suitable for this special site. This inaugural vintage of Margaret's Vineyard Estate Red represents this blend with 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 17% Malbec, 6% Petite Verdot and 6% Carmenere. Many of our customers have been treated to this wonderful wine from barrel; after four-and-a-half years from the time we planted Margaret's, it is available in bottle. Enjoy!
  Merlot (Red Mountain)
Our 2004 Merlot is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from what we consider to be one of the best vineyards in the state; Ciel du Cheval on Red Mountain. Each year we build the Merlot with a focus on blending. We discovered that the best blend in 2004 was this single vineyard Merlot with a touch of Cab from “Ciel” as well. Our 2004 Ciel du Cheval Merlot has a core flavor of Bing cherry with a long smooth finish.
  Merlot, Red Mountain
Last year our 2003 Merlot was named as one of the top twelve Merlots in America by Wine and Spirits magazine. We feel the 2005 Merlot is showing even more depth and breadth of those same classic Red Mountain flavors and aromas that earned the 2003 its exceptional rating. 100% Merlot, made up of 65% Klipsun fruit and 35% Ciel du Cheval, this Red Mountain wine is sure to make those crisp fall nights a little cozier.
  Sauvignon Blanc
The sixth vintage of this special wine from what many consider to be Washington’s premier vineyards (one of the 25 best vineyards in the world according to Wine & Spirits), located in the Red Mountain appellation. Blended with 5% Semillon, our Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and dry, showing aromas and flavors of apple, pear and anise.
  Syrah
The 2004 vintage of Syrah has the deepest color of any wine John has produced. This full-bodied wine fills the mouth with juicy, spicy blackberry and raspberry fruits, with hints of earth and oak spice. Well-integrated tannins and acidity provide smooth drinking now but also good structure for pairing with food.
  Tre Fanciulli
Tre Fanciulli has been our flagship wine since 1999. An Italian term for three treasured boys, the "Tre" was named in honor of our three sons. This blend has always been a favorite of ours--hence the name. Blending Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciel du Cheval Merlot and Lewis Syrah has created a critically acclaimed wine since our first vintage in 1999. For our 2005 Tre, I decided to add juice from an additional vineyard to the wine; Boushey Syrah. Dick Boushey owns several vineyards near his home in Sunnyside, Washington and is recognized internationally as one of the world's top wine growers. I feel incredibly fortunate to add Boushey Vineyard Syrah to our portfolio of high-end sourced grapes. The resulting blend from these sensational fruit sources is a vintage of Tre that has beautiful color and great depth of flavors that compliment hearty dishes - our personal favorite with the Tre is lamb. Peggy and I are enjoying this wine now but it will cellar well for 10 + years.
  Tre Fanciulli
The 2004 Tre Fanciulli features Cabernet Sauvignon from Klipsun and Red Mountain Vineyards, Merlot from Ciel du Cheval and Syrah from Lewis Vineyard. This wine gets its power and muscle from the Cabernet, the luscious berry curves from the Merlot and a spicy complexity from the Syrah—wow! You won’t need those extra blankets when you treat yourself to this one. Traditionally we’ve encouraged cellaring the Tre to show its maximum potential. As with previous vintages, the 2004 Tre will cellar well – for up to a decade – but we are exceptionally pleased with how well it’s showing now; ripe, juicy and with a finish of tremendous length. Blend percentages: 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 14 % Syrah.
  Viognier
Our second vintage of Viognier, from rising-star Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope in the Columbia Valley (blended with 6% Roussanne from the esteemed Ciel du Cheval Vineyard of Red Mountain). Styled after the wines of the famous Condrieu appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley. The huge nose of sweet peach and apricot jump from the glass, and the mouthfeel is viscous and rich – both of which belie the wine’s crisp texture and bone dry finish.
