White Heron Cellars
|
|
White Heron Cellars is located in the middle of our vineyard property in the ghost town of Trinidad, between Quincy and Wenatchee, above the Columbia River in Washington State. The winery started making wine in 1986 with a Washington State Pinot Noir. In the spring of 1988, White Heron released the 1986 Pinot Noir and the 1987 Dry Riesling. Subsequent vintages of these wines have been released and in 1990 White Heron added the 1988 Chantepierre - a meritage type blend of Cabernet Savignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Current vintages are made with grapes from our own vineyards and from selected Columbia Valley growers. Each wine is unique in style and creates its own niche in the wine world. The vineyard and winery site overlooks the Columbia River, Crescent Bar Resort, and the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Deep well-drained soils, southern slopes, excellent air drainage, and a ring of hills surrounding the site, make for an exceptional vineyard location. The first vines were planted in 1991. Varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Gamy, Syrah, Rousanne and Viognier.

Chanttepierre
The '98 blend is heavy in the rich berry flavors of merlot. The final blend 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 2% Malbec (Cot) and 26% Cabernet Franc. The '98 growing season was excellent. There was plenty of warmth and the weather was just quirky enough to give the grapes plenty of character. The grapes were all picked in the 23 to 25 Brix range. Fifty percent of the grapes for this wine came from our own vineyards. The remainder are from the Yakima Valley. We blend during fermentation so that the grapes marry in a complete fashion. The grapes are fermenteed in small one-ton containers and punched down (mixed) manually. The goal is to create wine with smooth flavors yet balabced with sufficient tannic structure. THese wines age well - the '88, our first Chantepierre, is still drinking very nicely. After pressing the wine spends one year in 4000 liter barrels. We then transfer the wine to 220 liter barrels for yet another year. All our barrels are old - we use barrels for aging and not for flavor. In September two years after picking we bottle. The result is the Chantepierre. White Heron's focus is on fruit. We achieve complexity through blending. Enjoy!

Chardonnay
This wine is rich and full-bodied yet balanced by good acidity. The use of neutral fermenting vessels ensured that this is a fruit forward wine with notes of honey and apricots on the nose. It will improve with age but makes an excellent drinking wine now. Serve as a before dinner wine or with pasta, poultry and lighter foods.

Dry Gewurztraminer
The 2002 Gewurztraminer came from the Quilomene Hills Vineyard. This vineyard was the first to be planted in the Quincy Valley and in the emerging Columbia Cascade Wine region since prohibition. The nineteen year old vines had plenty of time to ripen during the ’02 growing season and the grapes were harvested on October 20th at 25% sugar.

Mariposa Vineyard Red Wine
The blend consists of 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Malbec (Cot). Our goal is to create wines of complex flavors and with this wine we have succeeded. Bright fruit, tobacco and spice flavors combine with soft tannins in a harmonious whole that is drinkable now but will age for at least ten years.

Pinot Noir
The Pinot Noir from our Mariposa Vineyard has consistently given us deep color, intense fruit, and nice tannic structure. Even though the wine is very drinkable now it holds up well when left opwn, which means it will age well. This wine consistently surprises us; we cannot explain how a warm site such as ours can make suck a pleasant wine. It has been so consistent however that we have doubled the planting on the hillside.
