Voss Vineyards

Voss Vineyards Steve Fennell came to winemaking in a different way than most. He arrived on his bike. The California native loved riding his bicycle through wine country surrounding the University of California - Santa Barbara, where he should have been studying geography with an emphasis in geology. Those rides sparked his passion for wine. He raced bicycles for two years after graduation – why be normal and get a job? – and prepared to study oenology at UC Davis. After completing his studies, he spent the next five harvests at Trefethen Vineyards as assistant winemaker. He managed the cellar, made blends and worked with the vineyard manager to improve fruit quality. In 1999 Steve left Trefethen to become the winemaker at Voss Vineyards. “Voss is an exciting place to work,” Steve boasts. “We’re breaking new ground with our intense, in-your-face style of Sauvignon Blanc. We also are producing a world-class Syrah just when this noble varietal’s reputation is on the rise in California. “Another beautiful aspect of being the winemaker at Voss Vineyards is that I get to grow the fruit we use in our wines. By fine-tuning our farming practices, I can produce the grapes that perfectly match the style of wines we make.” He made a point of working two harvests for Yalumba in the Barossa Valley, the heart of Australian Shiraz (Syrah) country. He added the techniques he learned there to his own blend of skills. The result: a new style of wine from Napa Valley soil. Steve also had the benefit of learning from the pioneer of Viognier in Australia, Yalumba.

  Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon
The 2000 Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc /Semillon is golden yellow and shows intense classic botrytis characteristics of apricot and honey along with Sauvignon Blanc notes of passion fruit and orange zest. On the palate this seductive dessert wine explodes with sweet citrus and tropical flavors.
  Merlot
The Merlot is grown at our Voss estate vineyard in Rutherford in the heart of Napa Valley. The property has clay-loam soils and an ideal climate to slowly ripen the grapes. Cool evenings, due to coastal breezes, combine with warm, dry days to provide the basis for high-quality Merlot.
  Ocala
The name Ocala is inspired by the obsidian arrowheads that pepper our vineyard in Rutherford. Like the Native American crafts, this Syrah represents our finest effort. We have hand-selected clusters from our best blocks and gently crafted them in the cellar to express the wine’s “sense of place."
  Sauvignon Blanc
We grow the fruit for our Sauvignon Blanc on the Voss Vineyards estate in Rutherford and two nearby blocks with similar soil profiles. We also source fruit from two other distinguished vineyards, one in Oakville and one in Yountville. The Rutherford site produces grapes of intensely perfumed tropical fruit character. The Oakville and Yountville vineyards impart good acidity and citrus and mineral flavors.
  Shiraz
Our 2000 Shiraz shows what the perfect balance of intense sunlight, warm days and cool nights contribute to the intensity of this noble grape. The wine displays a blackish red color with lifted aromas of blackberries, plums, and licorice. On the palate the flavors of wild cherries and sweet vanilla are wrapped in supple tannins for a mouth filling wine.
  Syrah
The fruit for our Syrah is grown both at our estate vineyard in Rutherford and a block farther south in the Napa Valley. The Syrah from our vineyard provides the backbone of the blend with deep black fruits and tannin structure, while the other block, grown in a cooler site, contributes boosted pepper and berry notes.
  Viognier
The fruit for our Viognier is from the Cold Creek Vineyard in Carneros. The extremely well drained sandy loam is quite a departure from the normal Carneros clay. Temperatures during the growing season are rather cool, with high temperatures generally in the high 70s to low 80s. This leads to a long growing season and a late harvest date, giving the vines time to develop concentrated flavor in the grapes.
  VV2 Sauvignon Blanc
The 2002 VV2 Sauvignon Blanc is greenish straw in color and is intense in aromas of melon, guava, grapefruit and fig. On the palate this wine is bursting with melon and citrus flavors. This classic Sauvignon Blanc finishes with crisp and lingering citrus peel notes. The fruit for our VV2 Sauvignon Blanc is grown primarily in Rutherford at our Voss estate vineyard in and a nearby block. Our vineyard has a clay loam soil, while the other consists of a gravelly loam. Additionally, we source a little fruit from another distinguished vineyard site in Yountville. The Voss estate vineyard purchased in 1996, contains heavy clay-loam soils, which when combined with this ideal climate, produce grapes of intensely perfumed tropical fruit character. The two other vineyards are on lighter deeper loam soil. This combined with the slightly cooler climate imparts citrus and mineral flavors along with good acidity.
