Stags Leap Winery

Stags Leap Winery Like those before him, winemaker Robert Brittan has carefully maintained the inherent character of this famous estate. In every vintage, he is a stickler for waiting to pick grapes until they have full phenolic maturity - i.e. fully ripe seeds and skins, not just appropriate Brix. This practice, which requires Robert's constant tasting and re-tasting in the vineyard as harvest nears, ensures that the characteristic big-but-soft Stags' Leap structure is allowed to fully develop. In the bottle, these are sophisticated wines that epitomize the distinctive qualities of the soils, valley and district in which they are grown. All of our wines are available through select retail and restaurant outlets, with the exception of our Carignane and our Amparo Rosé, which are only available through Stags' Leap Winery.

  Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon
A Higher Target, A New Name. The replanting of our estate vineyards now allows us to designate a larger proportion of our own superb fruit for use in our Napa Valley Cabernet. Previously, our blend had drawn from selected vineyards in many parts of the valley to weave together its varied terrain and represent the Napa Valley as a whole. Now, with the 2002 vintage, we are elevating our sights to focus not on a representative style, but on a balance of harmony and tension, of power and suppleness, targeting what we call the golden mean principle expressed so beautifully in our estate wines FAY, SLV and CASK 23. We chose the name Artemis to reflect this new vision for the Napa Valley Cabernet.
  Hawk Crest Cabernet Sauvignon
A burst of cherry in the nose opens further to reveal discrete earthiness and accents of allspice. Firm acidity provides brightness to an entry of new leather and ripe cherry and raspberry flavors. Supple tannins attenuate the seductiveness of the fruit. Try with grilled tri-tip steaks served with herb butter and homemade onion rings or bouillabaisse.
  Hawk Crest Chardonnay
Cool coastal valleys provided grapes with bright acidity. Opulent fruit flavors and richness were found further inland. The perfume of stone fruits reminds one of summers bountiful harvest. On the palate, luminous peach and pear flavors sparkle with a playful acidity. Partial barrel and malolactic fermentation add creaminess, while moderate French oak aging creates further dimension. This wine will complement grilled fish served with flavored butters or spicy hors doeuvres.
  Hawk Crest Merlot
Allspice accents highlight smoky boysenberry and dried cherry aromas. A supple tannic backbone preserves bright fruit flavors enhanced by a kiss of oak. Try with spicy grilled ribs or paella.
Stags' Leap Amparo Napa Valley Rosé
Soft pink in color, this refreshing wine features pleasing aromas of berries, slight spice and floral notes on the nose as flavors of raspberry and strawberry commingle on the palate. A touch of citrus and spice lead to crisp acidity that highlights floral back notes as the wine finishes with fruit to the end.
Stags' Leap Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, The Leap
As is tradition here at Stags' Leap, we put the Cabernet through an extended maceration to extract color and structure and fermented the fruit in a combination of open and closed tanks for maximum flavor development. Two years of ageing in French oak barrels completes the process. The nose shows elegant, dried herb aromatics, leading into ripe flavors of black fruits: blackberry, plum and cassis. That briary character, a Stags' Leap signature, is in evidence, as are notes of rhubarb, black pepper and licorice. A structure of finely grained tannin is the last major component here, binding the ripe, mature flavors together and ensuring that this wine will continue to evolve in the cellar for many years to come.
  Stags' Leap Estate Grown Merlot
as of blackberry, cassis, currant, and dark chocolate are enhanced by cinnamon, cardamom and clove spice nuances. Stags' Leap's signature brambly character is immediately recognizable in this elegant, rich wine. On the lush midpalate, black fruit flavors are highlighted by a bright, well-integrated acidity. The seamless, long, full-bodied finish suggests liquid velvet.
Stags' Leap Estate Grown Petite Syrah Field Blend, Ne Cede Malis
This classic Stags' Leap field blend begins with aromas of brooding black fruit with hints of floral and spice. The rich base of Petite Syrah lends flavors of blackberry, black cherry and cocoa, as toasty notes of roasted coffee integrate with the firm tannins that wrap the fruit in velvet clear to the finish.
Stags' Leap Estate Grown Rhône-style Field Blend, Ne Cede Malis
Ne Cede Malis introduces aromas of black fruits wrapped in orange peel, roasted nut, clove and vanilla bean. This inky, almost blue black, full bodied wine boasts flavors of blackberry, black currant, cherry, licorice and cassis. A substantial tannin structure that is well integrated because of 22 months barrel aging in American oak carries the fruit and spice flavors into a long, rich finish. Earthiness adds another dimension. “This wine shows an unabashed personality. The fruit is so expressive, and the structure is quintessentially Stags’ Leap,” adds Brittan. Heirloom Petite Syrah Vine —Stags’ Leap Vineyard
Stags' Leap Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The beautiful, ripe grape clusters that went into this Cabernet Sauvignon began arriving at the Winery in mid-October. As has become tradition at Stags’ Leap, the fruit for this wine was hand-picked in small bins and fermented separately in a combination of open and closed top fermentors. By doing this, Kevin was able to maximize the concentration and extraction of the juice for the final blending process. The wine was aged in 100 percent French oak barrels (50 percent new) for 24 months. A year into the aging process Kevin assembled the final blend so that the wine had time to become one with itself well before bottling. Rich ruby red in color, luscious aromatics of black cherry, blackberries, and plum greet the nose with a slight back note of earth, leather, and bittersweet chocolate. Flavors of plum compote, spice, green tea, and cocoa are the introduction to this wine as velvety, unctuous tannins blend with a juicy, naturally balanced mid-palate of complex structure. Layers of spice, coffee and cream integrate with fruit notes to the end.
  Stags' Leap Napa Valley Chardonnay
Pleasing aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, peach, spice and floral notes are the introduction to this balanced Chardonnay, which features flavors of green apple, lemon and pineapple on the palate, and a creamy mouthfeel from aging on the lees. Backnotes of spice from the French oak and a touch of minerality commingle with the rich fruit flavors for a generous, long finish.
  Stags' Leap Napa Valley Merlot
This is a full-bodied Merlot expressing black cherry, cocoa bean and rum-soaked raisin aromas. There are notes of black plum, nutmeg and vanilla cream on the mid-palate. The tannins are smooth and earthy and the wine is complete and balanced with a long finish that warms you in a soft wake of English bitters.
Stags' Leap Napa Valley Petite Syrah
From the look of the wine, you'd expect it to be massive on the palate, but one of the pleasures of our Petite Syrah is its finesse and elegance. This is an unusually complex and layered vintage. The nose teems with blackberries, red currants, cut hay, and burnt oranges. On the palate this sensuous wine is a mouthful of rich bitter chocolate, French vanilla, and raspberries wrapped in round, sappy tannins. It's at once fascinating and intriguing, leaving you with a reverberating finish.
  Stags' Leap Napa Valley Syrah
The luxuriant 2001 Syrah welcomes you with ripe blackberry aromas and flavors burnished with raspberry and black cherry. Look for a touch of mint hidden among leather and tobacco. Brittan chose to protect the fruit’s integrity by aging the wine in mostly used French oak barrels for 14 months-keeping the wood nuances integrated and balanced. A touch of Petite Syrah was added for complexity, and a solid structure of round tannins supports the long finish of this full-bodied wine.
  Stags' Leap Napa Valley Viognier
Intensely rich and distinctive, this Viognier features pleasing notes of honey suckle, lemon blossoms and spice on the nose, which transition to fresh white peaches and citrus characteristics on the palate, together with a creamy mouthfeel that carries on throughout the long, luscious finish.
  Stag's Leap Sauvignon Blanc
Bright aromas of lime, passion fruit, and exotic spices signal this wine’s sophisticated appeal. Flavors of comice pear and mandarin orange are balanced by flinty mineral notes, and the rounded, refined texture leads into a persistent, creamy finish. This food-friendly wine pairs beautifully with a salad of smoked salmon, endive, apples, and butterball potatoes.
