Townshend Cellar
|
|
Townshend Celler is a family owned and operated business. Our family consists of Don and Michelle Townshend and sons, Brendon and Michael. We became a bonded winery in 1998, but have been producing small amounts of personal use wines since the early 1990's. Living in the Greenbluff area of Eastern Washington gave us access to many varieties of fresh fruit. Our business began initially as an interest in possibly starting a small winery which would produce small custom lots of fruit wines from the Greenbluff area. After many batches of cherry, raspberry, peach, pear, strawberry and other fruit wines, it was determined (although good) that fruit wines would not be marketable for prices high enough to cover the costs of small lot production. In 1996 (a good huckleberry year) a small batch of Huckleberry wine (port-style) was made as a joint venture with Preston Premium Wines. At this point it was unknown to what extent the Townshend's would be involved.

The sweetness of this wine complements the natural tartness and acidity of the huckleberry. Made in a port-style this wine pairs nicely with chocolate and other desserts or sipped by itself.

"OUT STANDING – This spent 30 months in oak and has the feel of an old boys’ club with effects of leather and pipe tobacco as well as dark, dense blueberries, green peppercorns and juniper berries. Blackberry and black current flavors are joined by black chocolate. It’s a serious drink for serious times.”

Reserve
"OUTSTANDING! - In some parts of the country, Don Townshend could get twice his asking price for this, his top-end wine, a blend of Cab Sauv (55%), Cab Franc (30 %) and Merlot (15%). It lived in small French and American oak for 30+ months, creating an unusual make-up of purple fruit, root beer barrel, forest moss and minerality. Inside is a rich mouth feel of blackberries, black cherries, plums, coffee and fairly bold tannins. This screams for a steak and will put hair on your chest at the same time."
