Inniskillin

Inniskillin Inniskillin, co-founded by Donald J.P. Ziraldo and Karl J. Kaiser, is located in the town of Niagara-On-The-Lake, Canada, on the Niagara Peninsula. Inniskillin was granted the first estate winery license in Canada. The name Inniskillin is Irish and is derived from the famous Irish regiment, the Inniskilling Fusiliers. Colonel Cooper, a member of this regiment, served in North America in the War of 1812. On completion of his military service, he was granted Crown land which he named the Inniskillin Farm. The first Inniskillin winery was housed in an old packing shed at the family nursery, two kilometres (km) from its current location. As the popularity of thier wines grew it was necessary to enlarhe the winer 1978, Inniskillin relocated to our present site, The Brae Burn Estate. Winemaker Karl Kaiser is noted for his Icewine. The greatest of international accolades for Canadian Icewine was bestowed on Inniskillin in 1989 at Vinexpo, and at Bordeaux, in June 1991. This wine, judged by an international panel, was accorded the fair's highest award, Le Grand Prix d'Honneur.

Directions
The Wine Boutique is situated at the Winery on Line 3 (Service Road 66) off the Niagara Parkway. The Boutique is located in the restored barn. (1 1/2 hrs from Toronto, 5 min from the Shaw Theatre and Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake).

Alluring and pleasant aromas of lightly buttered fresh fruits – pear, apple, papaya and fig are drizzled with a layer of caramel. A delicious mouthful of Chardonnay, with well-integrated layers of upfront spiced fruit, and a lingering zest of citrus.
  2001 Gamay Noir Black Label
Lifted fragrance of plums and strawberries with some complex spicy aroma’s. Flavors of concentrated strawberries are balanced with good acidity, creating a soft lingering finish.

Typical jammy, red berry fruit and spice on the nose with a hint of floral notes. Nice vanilla flavour on the palate with good fruit and firm tannins. A full-bodied wine with a nice long finish.

Featuring classic varietal aromas of dried herbs, fresh raspberries, red currants, green olives and tobacco leaf. Upfront flavours of eucalyptus and fresh berry fruit combined with agreeable tannins offer a well-balanced palate pleasing finish.

This is a smooth wine with firm tannins. A wonderful nose of raspberry, cherry, eucalyptus and black licorice (Pinot Noir is and will continue to be Niagara’s signature red.) Bright cherries and earthy aromas. Perfectly balanced. Score: 93/100.

The aroma has toasted buttery notes, butterscotch and apple blossoms. On the palate, medium-bodied with good acidity and a hint of caramel. A nice long length on the finish.

Rich toast oak with melon and peach aroma. Elegant peach fruit on palate with a very long melon fruit finish. Good integration of fruit and oak flavours through the barrel fermentation and less aging process.

Lots of red berry fruit on the nose with red currant, plum, chocolate and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins and vanilla. A good elegant length on the finish.

A beautiful, pronounced nose of plum, spice, dark-berry fruit and chocolate. The palate is full-bodied, well balanced and follows through the nose with a mouthful of lovely fruit and chocolate. A pleasing mix, featuring aromas of wild cherry, raspberries, red licorice, and smoked chocolate. Great upfront fruit flavors, medium-bodied texture and soft agreeable tannins make this wine, both pleasant and approachable.

Rich melon and peach aroma, with toasted vanillin barrel ferment character. Elegant peach and citrus palate with a very long melon fruit finish. Seamless integration of fruit and oak flavours through the barrel fermentation and less aging process.
  2002 Montague Estate Vineyard Merlot Single Vineyards
This is a powerful and structured wine displaying ripe and intense fruit of the forest, blood plum and varietal tobacco leaf characters underpinned by elegant French vanillin oak. The palate is again dominated by berry fruit intensely and robust, yet stylish tannin structure befitting a wine of this quality. This is a rich and intense Merlot that will certainly reward those patient enough to cellar the wine, but then again – life is too short!
  2002 Pinot Gris Single Vineyards
Seaway News, Cornwall, ON June 18, 2004 ""Inniskillin Pinot Gris 2002 is another single vineyard selection from The Wine Rack, this time the Montague Estates Vineyard. Pinot Gris is an often-overlooked varietal that is deserving of a higher profile. This wine, with rich flavours and a wonderful finish, shows Pinot Gris as its best and should win over a few more fans. I have always loved the Pinot Gris nose and this is no exception with complex melon, pear and tropical fruit and just a hint of pepper. Bright citrus, cantaloupe, and pear fruit are underlain with just a hint of banana and anise. The anise gives the wine a pleasant spiced quality on the finish. A racy acidity balances and enhances the fruit. The finish is "crisp and invigorating, perfect for summer enjoyment. Overall it is a wonderfully balanced, medium full-bodied wine. Inniskillin Pinot Gris would make a splendid summer aperitif, sure to delight guests. As a partner for food, it will shine with roast or grilled vegetables, barbecued chicken, salmon and spicy grilled shrimp.
