Vin Du Lac Winery

Vin Du Lac Winery The Vin du Lac winery sits on a hilltop rising 200 feet above Lake Chelan, with superb views of the lake, Chelan Butte, and the town of Chelan. The grounds have been orchard land since the 1920's, and one half of the property remains working orchard. Seven acres of vineyard were planted in the spring of 2002. The winery itself is housed in two old orchard sheds that were fully remodeled and updated to serve as modern winery production facilities. Remnants of the buildings' former character remain, including the hand-laid stone foundation of the barrel room, which bears the inscription "Sept. 1937". The old orchard farmhouse, built in the twenties, has also been updated, and now serves as the winery tasting room. It has been styled after a French country bistro, and besides our broad selection of wines, inside you will find a unique selection of meats, cheeses, breads, olives, french baguettes, and other delicious items to enjoy with a glass of wine on the adjacent lake-view patio. The setting of the winery, nestled amongst vineyard and orchard, is serene and romantic. The ambiance is both old world and country. The natural beauty and views of the surrounding countryside are classic eastern Washington -- or are they of Provence?? Is that Lake Chelan winding into the hills, or the Rhone river working its way beneath the battlements of the Chateuneuf-du-Pape? Come see for yourself, to relax and unwind and experience a little of what the French call "joie de vivre"....

Directions
The winery is located within the city limits of Chelan, one-half mile northwest of downtown off of Highway 150 (Chelan-Manson Highway). Take a left at Spader Bay Drive, across from No-See-Um road, and drive up to the bright yellow buildings.

"LEHM" Dry Riesling (Michaela's Vineyard) - Columbia Valley
Blazingly tart. Stunningly intense. So dry you'll be tempted to serve it in Martini glasses. This first "Lehm" wine from Vin du Lac is the result of Larry's obsession to craft a truly dry Riesling that honors the heritage of this noblest of grapes, & also reflects the "earth" from which it was grown. Here he seeks & achieves a Riesling that is unique in style, certainly unlike anything else being crafted in Washington. The northern vineyard site from which this wine was sourced ripens the late-maturing Riesling slowly, with incredible acid retention, yielding a wine of tart crispness & intense fruit.
"LEHM" Sauvignon Blanc (Michaela's Vineyard) - Columbia Valley
This Estate Sauvignon Blanc is another example of the crisp wines which Michaela's Vineyard promises to produce. Chalky minerality & searingly tart acidity bespeak the relatively cool late summer ripening periods & the volcanic & glacial soils of the Chelan Valley. The wine was fermented in small steel barrels with frequent lees stirring to soften the wine a bit U add some mid-palate structure. The brisk lemon-lime & gooseberry flavors of this wine are unusual for Washington & should be viewed as a harbinger of things to come & as a source of joy to true lovers of cool climate-north country Sauvignon Blanc.
BARREL SELECT Cabernet Franc - Columbia Valley
2004 was very warm & the brix rose quickly. Fortunately this vintage we added some fruit from our northerly "Michaela's Vineyard" which moderated the alcohol somewhat & helped retain natural acidity. The Merlot component in the blend fleshes out the mid-palate, providing dark fruit to balance the intrinsic Cabernet Franc herbaceousness. Barrel aged for 11 months in one year old barrels to minimize oak imprint, the wine is bid & full bodied, yet elegant. Gold Medal - NW Wine Summit .
BARREL SELECT Cabernet Sauvignon - Yakima Valley
Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot add red fruit, depth & structure to the elegant backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon in this Bordeaux blend. The wine was barrel aged for 21 months in 90% new French oak. 2003 was a warm vintage & the wine is ripe & full bodied, yet the alcohol is moderate & the acid substantial, making this an elegant & age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon blend.
  Barrel Select CHARDONNAY– Columbia Valley
Bright Citrus, delicate corn silk & floral scents; pear-apple and mild lemon-lime citrus flavors. Mouth-warming richness, crisp acidity, and a lingering finish. Gold Medal-2006 Pacific Rim Int'l Wine Competition.
BARREL SELECT Merlot - Columbia Valley
2003 was a hot year & the Merlot came in ripe, dark & structured. The Cab Franc & Malbec in this blend add depth, dimension & overall complexity to the big, dark fruit flavors of the Merlot. The wine was barrel aged for 21 months in 90% new French oak. Bold & dramatic, the wine will nevertheless accompany well many rich meals, & should age gracefully for five to ten years. Silver Medal - Pac Rim Int'l Wine Comp.
BARREL SELECT Syrah - Columbia Valley
Just selected as "OUTSTANDING" by Wine Press NW. This Syrah has swirling, smoky, meaty, & blackberry scents. Dark plum, chocolate, & bouillon flavors with a mouth filling richness and ripe tannins to lengthen the finish. Gold Medal - NW Wine Summit; Silver Medals - Dallas Int'l Wine Comp., Capital Food & Wine Festival, Riverside Int'l Wine Comp, & Los Angeles County Fair
  CABERNET SAUVIGNON
100% barrel fermented, but with a high percentage of neutral oak, Vin du Lac Cabernet Sauvignon presents a hearty fruit nose, dense mouthfeel, and flavors of plum and cherry, matched with perfectly soft tannins. “Big Red” lovers like this wine for its bold fruit structure, but everyday red wine drinkers appreciate its almost Merlot-like approachability.
  CUVEE ROUGE
We combined the Bordeau varietals Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) with the premier Rhone varietal Syrah (20%) because we like the contrast of bright cherry fruit with deeper blackberry and plum flavors and smoky nuances. Non-traditional? But of course! But also non-boring! Gold Medal-Pacific Rim Int'l Wine Competition
  GEWURZTRAMINER
aracter: ripe fruit, slightly sweet, off-dry styling, with mineral elements & crisp acidity. Nose has ginger, spice, & orange blossom; the rich fruit & floral character follow through on the palate. Lightly fined in order to retain maximum flavor.
GRISANT! PINOT GRIS - Yakima Valley
Grisant means Exhilarating! Heady! Which this wine is: ripe, rich and full bodied, with mingling aromas of grapefruit, pear and melon, yet with a crisp, dry finish. It is great with seafood or to share with friends after a Grisant! day. Gold Medals at '06 Dallas Morning News Int'l Wine Comp and the '06 L.A. County Fair Int'l Wine Comp
ICE WINE (Michaela's Vineyard) - Chelan County
Hand-picked by Larry, Michaela & their unwitting and very chilly staff in the middle of the snowy season! A dessert wine this is, but you will find it delicate and elegant, not cloying. Packaged in a beautifully silk-screened, frosted 375 ml tall bottle, and sealed with a cool-blue snowdrift of satiny wax. This one is a treasure to cellar for years, or to give to that person you want to tell "You're Special".
  LES AMIS Riesling (and friends!)
Riesling (75%) is intense and crisp; Gewurztraminer (15%) is soft and spicy; Muscat (10%) is softer yet, and flowery beyond belief. Together they make a wine for sharing. One that is off-dry, rich and aromatic. Exceptional with spicy foods, like blackened fish or Thai dishes. Silver Medal - Riverside Int'l Wine Comp
  MERLOT-RESERVE
Yakima Valley. 21 months in French Oak. Includes 8% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. A Bourdeaux blend with classic Merlot character. Emphasis on elegance and refinement: medium body, soft tannins, delicate fruit. A merlot-lover's Merlot
NV ROSE" of Cabernet Franc - Columbia Valley
This Estate Rose' from Vin du Lac bursts with fruit intensity, yet possesses depth & structure. 25% 2004 Estate Sangiovese was barrel fermented after early pressing for tannin retention & barrel character. 75% 2005 Estate Cabernet Franc was given 24 hours skin contact & then steel fermented to maximize strawberry & rhubarb flavors. The intense fruit herbaceousness of the Cabernet Franc combines with the earth, tobacco & subtle smoke flavors of the Sangiovese to create a wine that is light & refreshing, yet rich, structured & hearty enough to serve as an excellent food & holiday wine.
RED CAFE' Cabernet Sauvignon - Columbia Valley
Our cafe' red! Aged 21 months in French oak, we made the Cabernet in a powerfully rich, food-friendly style. Primarily Mattawa area fruit shows true, classic Cabernet character, with solid tannins, and light herbaceousness underlying the red fruit flavor profile. Elegant styling makes this a food wine par excellence! Same barrel regimen as our Barrel Select Cab, but at a price that offers superb value. Silver Medal -2006 NW Wine Summit
  SAVVY! BLANC– Columbia Valley
Savvy wine drinkers know what they like; a hint of sweetness to enliven the crisp, ripe pear and melon flavors. A very drinkable, hip wine. Silver medal 2006 Washington Wine Competition
  VIE! VIOGNIER – Columbia Valley
Delicate and dry with lively essence of peach, apricot, and fruit tree blossoms. Fruit from nearby Antoine Creek Vineyard and our very own Michaela's Vineyard produce a varietally correct but exceedingly crisp Viognier.
