Sierra Starr Vineyard & Winery
The Starr family has been producing award winning wines in the Sierra Foothills since 1996. We take pride in crafting small lot wines from our
estate vineyards, specializing in Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc (along with many others). We strive for our wines to express our unique terroir and showcase varietal character at its finest. Utilizing our under ground-gravity flow winery, solar power and dry farming, we sustainably craft our wines with passion. We welcome you to taste these wines and experience all that downtown Grass Valley, the heart of the gold country, has to offer.

Cabernet Franc
The home Cabernet Franc vineyard, (planted in 1998) is beginning to produce some really wonderful Cabernet Franc. This 2002 Cab Franc is rich, dark and fruity with a wonderful aroma and a nice long finish. Extreamly limited production in 2002 with about 40 cases.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Our Cabernet Sauvignon is a full bodied 100% Cab. It has benefited from nearly 2 years in French oak In barrel tasting, the French oak wins so we will use more French oak in aging future vintages. This wine shows classic Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with firm acids and medium tannin levels. These tannin and acid levels help balance the rich fatty flavors of beef. Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic with Brie. While quite drinkable upon release, it can be cellared for 5 to 7 years and will only get better during that time. Our Cab is also not filtered at bottling.
Chardonnay
This wine was fermented in all French Oak barrels and is 100% ML and sur lee aged giving the wine a nice buttery, butterscotch character. This is a very popular wine and is sure to sell out before the next release is ready.
Estate Chardonnay
This wine was whole cluster pressed and then fermented in French Oak Barrels. The wine was sur lee aged with occasional stirring and is 100% malolactic. this is a very nice soft buttery Chardonnay and we recommend serving it only slightly chilled.
Five Starr Port
3 Portuguese variety’s from Amador County, plus estate Zinfandel and Cabernet from our home vineyard make up this non vintage port. The blend contains approximately 80% of a 1999 Portuguese blend to which we add some of our Estate Zinfandel and Cabernet Port's. This blend is aged in a 338 gallon German made oak oval. We bottle the port on an as needed basis and as we use wine from the oak oval it is replenished with varital ports that we keep in small oak cooperages. This method ensures that this wine will change slowly over time, rather than abruptly from vintage to vintage. Slightly tawny, slightly ruby,19% alcohol. 8 % residual sugar.
Merlot
Our small home Merlot vineyard produces grapes that make a wine that is very structured, fruity and firm. This is not a flabby Merlot that disappears in the presence of food. A Very small production item varying from 40-60 cases.
Old Clone Zinfandel
Historically our flag ship Zin. Very Fruity and smooth. Medium bodied, a very good food wine. Our area (climate, elevation, soil) creates a well balanced, food friendly Zin, fairly age worthy.
Phil's Select Zinfandel
Barrel selection by wine maker of all 2002 Zin’s. Bigger Zin that the others. Very smooth, nice long finish
Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Barrel selection by wine maker. Aged in all French Oak Barrels for 22 months. In bottle for 1 year before release. Very nice nose, good fruit, long luxuriant finish, extremely fine, silky tannins. The current release of the Reserve Cabernet is the 2002 and is extremely smooth with cherries, plums and a mineral character. This Reserve Cabernet is truly a Bordeaux blend, containing 8% Merlot, and 8% Cab Franc, both from out home vineyard. These additions add to the complexity of the wine and the wonderful complex finish.
Sangiovese
This wine was barrel aged for 20 months in the cave. With fruit sourced from Amador County, this wine has plenty of ripe fruit flavors.
Sauvignon Blanc
This wine has really turned some heads. With a huge Citrus And Grapefruit expression it is very crisp and fruity. Serve it cold and enjoy this wonderful wine. The grapes come from out home vineyard located just 2 miles from downtown Grass Valley from vines that were planted in 1980. This wine is proving to be so popular that we are currently in the process of expanding our production of these grapes.
