Lost Rhino Brewing Co.
|
|
Lost Rhino is a craft brewery opening soon in Ashburn, Virginia. While the brewery is new, it carries on a strong brewing heritage in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
The Old Dominion Brewing Company was a major fixture in the Washington area bar and restaurant scene since its inception in 1989. It produced several award winning beers and many a thirsty Washingtonian would gather at the company's brew pub in Ashburn, Virginia. In 2007, Old Dominion was purchased by a small Delaware brewer in which Anheuser-Busch had a major interest. In 2009, Old Dominion announced that it was closing is Ashburn brewery and consolidating operations in Delaware. Things haven't been the same since. The annual beer festivals held in Ashburn were cancelled. In order to concentrate on core brands, several of hte award winning brews were discontinued. Along the way, many loyal Dominion customers became disenfraanchised and a large chasm emerged in the Washington metro beer scene. Many wondered if there would ever be a local beer again.
While the Old Dominion Brewery was being dismantled, we, two of the brewers from Old Doninion, Matt Hagerman and Favio Garcia had other plans. With a bulldozer hot on our tail, we went through the now defunct brewery and pub purchasing everything we could. In the end, we took away the "hot side" equipment and some of the pub furniture. the equipment was put in storage until a location could be found to set up a brewery. It was literally stored in 5 tractor trailers in nearby Sterling. Over the next few months we searched for a suitable site for the brewery. We didn't want to venture too far from where Old Dominion once was and we found and ideal location just west of the old location, on Red Rum Drive, between Waxpool Road and Ashburn Village Boulevard. We took a lease on 9,000 square feet and moved in the equipment.

Lost Rhino Pacific Pils
With a rich, dense, creamy head, this crisp Keller style golden lager is clean and refreshing.
Premium brewer's malt creates a sweet backbone, but hops are what really make this brew stand out.
The prominent hop flavor and fresh aroma are from the noble Halertau and Saaz.
This beer is served unfiltered, so the complex taste created during the slow brewing process is not stripped away.

New River Pale Ale
This American style pale ale is a medium bodied, golden colored ale made from pale, caramel, Munich and wheat malts.
The proportions of each grain contribute to the color, sweetness, maltiness and body found in the New River Pale Ale.
These characteristics are necessary to stand up to the four generous additions of hops added both to the kettle
and the secondary fermenter. This is hoppy beer!
New River Pale Ale is crafted in small batches using only 100% American ingredients.
