Lange Winery

Lange Winery In 1987, Don and Wendy Lange left California and followed their hearts to Oregon's North Willamette Valley. Fueled by a passion for Pinot Noir and a love of the land, they founded their winery on 30 acres in the Red Hills above Dundee. Yamhill County, where Lange Winery is located, is home to most of Oregon's vineyards and wineries. It's no coincidence that some of the best examples of Pinot Noir in the world come from this area. The Lange's first vintage consisted of the three varietals they embrace today: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. Lange Winery is the first among a handful of producers to offer two styles of Pinot Gris, having pioneered a barrel fermented version of the popular varietal with their premier vintage back in 1987. Some of the finest grapes the winery uses come from the Lange's own fifteen acres of Pinot Noir. To supplement the requirements of the 10,000-case winery, Winemaker Don works diligently with area growers to produce the best fruit. Known for his even hand, he crafts beautifully balanced wines, vintage after vintage. Wendy acts as the general manager, overseeing all facets of day-to-day winery operations.

  "Dundee Hills" Estate Pinot Noir
The finest ten barrels from our oldest block of our outstanding Dundee Hills Estate vineyard. Planted in 1988 by the Lange Family, this 2004 continues the tradition of superb pinot noir marked by its deep complexity, elegant stucture, and mouth-watering texture. Showing the bright red fruits and Indian spices we've come to associate with Dundee Hills wines, this wine is approachable now but will continue to develop over time. Only 200 cases produced, this wine will sell out quickly.
  Bricolage Blanc
The 2005 Bricolage Blanc is a beautiful cuvee composed of Willamette Valley Gewurtzraminer, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris. The nose displays all the floral nuances characteristic of these varietals as well as hints of peach and citrus. On the palate, this wine shines with hints of orange zest, meyer lemon, and stonefruit. As with all Lange Estate wines, the Bricolage Blanc is exceptionally well-balanced, expansive in the mid-palate, and finishes clean. With three percent residual sugar, this wine is off-dry, but the acid structure ensures a clean, fine-tuned finish. Enjoy!
  Chardonnay Willamette Valley
This lovely wine also hails from the highly touted Yamhill Vineyards. Small berries on small clusters contribute to the concentration of ripe fruit and floral characters. In the idiom of fine French chardonnay, the hallmarks of this wine are its fruit and structure, as opposed to domination of oak and char flavors. We think this wine is quite indicative of the yellow rose on its label: bright and lovely with layers of depth and complexity.
  Freedom Hill Pinot Noir
Quantity: Lange Winery has sourced world-class pinot noir and pinot gris from the Duschee family since 1990. Nestled in the foothills of Oregon's Coast Range Mountains, the Freedom Hill site is widely recognized as one of Oregon's premier vineyards. Known for its deep comlexity and righteous structure, Freedom Hill wines have garnered a very loyal following among pinot afficianados. One caveat though- like the Atlantic Salmon fly that adornes the label, you might very well become hooked.
  Pinot Blanc
Our seventh vintage of Pinot Blanc, this wine is seasoned in French oak barrels for eight months prior to bottling. A versatile wine that can be enjoyed either with dinner or as an aperitif, we find it redolent of pears and vanilla on the nose with rich fruit on the palate. As with all of our wines, the oak component is meant to be in sync with the fruit, allowing for the full expression of each varietal. A wonderful wine to bring along for a summer picnic or barbecue!
  Pinot Gris
Our classic Pinot "Grigio" style, this wine is fresh, bright, and at the forefront of great Oregon Pinot Gris. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks for ten months before bottling, and drinks well soon afterwards. The bouquet shows rich fruits — ripe pears and apples, while lush passionfruit and citrus layer the palate. Outstanding complexity and even balance between the structure and fruit make this wine a great choice for everyday drinking. (We know by first-hand experience!)
  Reserve Chardonnay
A blend from four spectacular sites in the northern Willamette Valley, our Reserve is indeed world-class, cool-climate Chardonnay. Our style, which differs substantially from the typical "California Style", has elements that reflect the region: Bright fruit characters of pears, melons, and citrus with lean and entertaining acids. Our Chardonnays undergo minimal malolactic conversion by design, and this helps to create a round and rich mouth feel without sacrificing the lovely acidy and balance inherent in the wine. This wine was fermented in a combination of both stainless steel and 2-3 year old French oak barrels which gives it a rich palate presence that isn't cloying. Do we think its good?-This is Wendy Lange's favorite white wine.
  Reserve Pinot Gris
Don Lange was the first winemaker in the nation to release a "Barrel-Fermented" Pinot Gris, making this wine a hallmark bottling in 1987. This wine sets the bar for Pinot Gris nationwide and we believe the 2004 to be among the finest ever. In addition to pioneering this style, Don Lange sources all the grapes for this unique wine from the Yamhill Vineyards; a gorgeous site located six miles west of the winery. Lush tropical fruit, finely balanced acids, supple textures, and higher-toned floral notes characterize the Yamhill Vineyards Pinot Gris. After 8 months in French Oak, we believe we've carried that statement through to bottling. Get some while you can!
  Reserve Pinot Noir
Our 2004 Reserve Pinot noir is sold out. We are very excited about the 2005's currently in barrel and hope to have the new vintage released by the fall. On another note, the 2004 Three Hills Cuvee is drinking beautifully right now!!
  Three Hills Cuvee
Good weather conditions, and even more importantly, superb vineyard locations provide the potential for world-class grapes. Add a proven winemaking style and experience and you have wines with elegance, complexity, texture, and structure. This wine has all these hallmarks. A blend of our "Terroir Series" — Lange Estate, the Yamhill Vineyards, and the Freedom Hill Vineyards — this wine is a combination of the most distinctive and proven wine regions in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Like all of our Pinot Noirs, these grapes were hand-picked, hand-sorted, fermented in 1.5 ton vessels and then punched down by hand daily. This process helps to keep a high skin-to-juice ratio, thus giving our wines rich and even extraction of flavors and color. In French oak for eighteen months, this wonderfully complex and elegant wine showcases the best Oregon has to offer for Pinot Noir in 2004: dark and lush blackberry fruits, bright Indian spices and chocolate, all supported by a firm but approachable acid and tannin backbone. This 2004 is drinking very nicely upon release but also has the required structure and balance for cellaring up to a decade or more. Enjoy this brand new release!
  Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Sold out for the 2004 vintage. Late summer release on the 2005, which is very promising in barrel right now. Keep your eyes open for this one!
  Yamhill Vineyards Pinot Noir
Located in the newly formed "Yamhill-Carlton District" AVA, the Yamhill vineyards was planted by the Stein family back in 1984. This 2004 is sourced from the oldest Pommard clone block in the vineyard and is typically the most approachable single vineyard wine we release. It shows exotic aromas and flavors of sandalwood, mint, anise, and cherries in both the bouquet and on the palate. Refined and elegant, this wine is more Katherine Hepburn than Marilyn Monroe. Enjoy with a keen eye for detail. Cheers!
