White Rock Vineyards

White Rock Vineyards In 1977, we set out to revive White Rock Vineyards where a vineyard and winery had been established in 1870 by Dr. J Pettingill. The original stone winery still stands after being converted into a residence in the 1920's. Today our wines are made in an underground cave, dug in 1988 from the same white volcanic rock that characterizes our vineyards. We first planted our 36 acre vineyard in 1979; 21 hillside acres in 4 Bordeaux varieties and 15 acres of chardonnay in the lowest and coolest sector of our valley. In recent years, under our son Michael's careful eye, we have replanted the vineyard, fine-tuning rootstock and clonal selection and increasing density and sun exposure for more concentrated and riper wines. Since 1986 we have been crushing our best fruit to produce about 3000 cases of White Rock wines. Douglas Danielak was our winemaker until 1998. Since 1999 our eldest son Christopher (finally back from studying and making wine in France, Spain, and Napa Valley) has taken charge of winemaking. With Michael's carefully rejuvenated vineyards and Christopher's passion for quality in the winery we look forward to even better wines in the future.

  Napa Valley Chardonnay
Spring-time notes of Chardonnay flower, citrus and linden, on the nose. Rich body attack with lemon, hazelnut and toasted almond. Great mouth-feel. Good fruit/acid balance with a crisp, clean, long finish. A very elegant vintage. Will develop further over 3 to 7 years.
  Napa Valley Chardonnay
"Meyer lemon, linden flower, honey, hazelnut and an undercurrent of toasty oak in the nose. In the mouth this wine delivers what the aroma promises: a rich mouthful of lemon cream pie and hazelnut crust, with lime, pineapple and mineral flavors that linger on the palate. Seamless and refreshing"
  Napa Valley Claret
2001 is a very ripe, not over-ripe vintage. Fruit flavors are darker than usual; with black berry and black cherry as well as plum. It has a very soft attack. The Cabernet predominates showing the tobacco, chocolate, licorice of White Rock’s white volcanic soils, and the cedar and coffee aromas of good French oak. All of this on an earthy base with the complexity of the Cab Franc’s violets and the Petit Verdot’s gamey and briary aromas. Right now the Merlot has not shown its fat yet. This vintage delivers dark deep fruit and an extraordinary complexity
  Napa Valley Claret
"Aromas of very dark fruit with a floral character of rose petal and violet on the nose. Dense blueberry and black cherry in mid-palate balanced by cedary oak. Good texture and complexity with hints of licorice, pleasant nutty mushroom and briar patch. This is a very masculine vintage with angular tannins lasting well into the finish. It opens up well with decanting and should be held down in the cellar for 3 to 10 years."
