Bruce Olson started making wine in 1997 when his sweetie Karen said, "we can't afford to keep buying wine every night." He started experimenting with maple sap when Karen said "how about tapping a tree?" Steve liked Bruce's apple wine and suggested distilling it to make applejack. When it turned out to taste really good, Steve and Bruce said "why don't we start selling this stuff?". Later they distilled his maple wine into the unique product they now call Knotted Maple. The company started production in September 2010. In March 2011, Tree Spirits Knotted Maple was awarded a bronze medal at the San Francisco International Spirits Competition. The Apple extra dry sparking wine went on sale in April 2011, won a Double Gold at the SF International Wine Competition, and is a runaway success. The Maple demi-sec wine won a Bronze and has a lot of die-hard fans who say they like the Maple better than the Apple. There you have the story of Tree Spirits til now, Sept, 2012 when Bruce and Karen bought Steve out and are starting to experiment with a Sparkling Pear.
