Trout River is one of the original 10 breweries in Vermont that have continued operations today. Brewers in the early 1990’s had a tendency toward brewing a variety of ales typically seen in Europe. This is when Dan Gates would make a splash with his gold medal in the American Homebrewers Association.
Dan and Laura Gates founded Trout River Brewing Company in July of 1996. Over the years, Dan developed some of best craft brews in the state of Vermont. These beers included Rainbow Red Ale, Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, Hoppin’ Mad Trout Ale, and Knight Slayer Imperial Stout. Trout River Brewing Company was one of the original players in the early stages of the Vermont craft beer movement and became well known throughout New England. In the fall of 2014, Dan decided to step down as owner of Trout River Brewing Company. Kelen Beardsley, Gabriel Streeter, and Trevor Billings, three friends from the town of Springfield, Vermont, purchased the brewery. The three new owners are incorporated under Vermont Beer Shapers, LTD., honoring the heritage of the building that they moved the brewery to, the Fellows Gear Shaper building, located in the heart of Springfield, VT. Trout River Brewing Company began brewing beer in their new location in March of 2016. The goal of Vermont Beer Shapers, under the DBA of Trout River Brewing Company, was to reinvent the brand that Dan spent 18 years building, while still keeping the small craft brews that people loved.
