Deppen Brewing

In 1845, Nicholas Felix opened the Spring Garden Brewery in Reading, Pennsylvania which quickly became a popular local spot to socialize and have a few beers. For 29 years, Felix slowly expanded the brewery, adding a malt house, two ice houses, a wagon shed, and stables.
After his death in 1874, Felix’s son-in-law, Dr. William Deppen, took over the business and established the now renamed Deppen Brewing Company as one of the best breweries in Eastern Pennsylvania. One account claimed that, “Dr. Deppen is able to produce a singularly pure, clear and palatable beverage whose quality is simply unsurpassed by the output of any other brewery in the country.” While business boomed, it unfortunately did not last. Unable to manage the challenges posed by Prohibition, the Deppen Brewing Company had to close. Until now.
Over 100 years after the original Deppen Brewing closed, the legacy of Dr. Deppen lives on. Now located in Wellington, Colorado, not Reading, Pennsylvania, Kyle Loewe and his mother Denise Deppen Loewe are bringing back the brewery that was once in the family. Focusing on traditional styles and using locally grown ingredients, we strive to create a family friendly brewery where everyone is welcome, and is pillar of the Wellington community, much in the same way as the original Deppen Brewing was
